Donald Trump’s push for a second White House term has not only fueled his political comeback but also reshaped the Republican Party, strengthening its grip on Washington. As of Wednesday morning, Trump secured 277 electoral votes, surpassing the 270 needed, with Wisconsin tipping in his favor around 5:30 a.m. Eastern time.
Republicans also regained control of the Senate, flipping three seats and aligning it more closely with Trump’s political style. New figures like Bernie Moreno, who unseated Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, and Tim Sheehy, who defeated Montana’s Jon Tester, are seen as bold, youthful voices in the GOP. Additionally, West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice triumphed over Democrat Joe Manchin’s Senate seat.
With the GOP now in charge of the Senate, it will face significant changes next year, including a new majority leader. While Mitch McConnell will keep his seat, he will step down as leader, and Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, a moderating voice, will not seek reelection.
Meanwhile, the balance of power in the House is still uncertain as key races in California remain undecided. However, conservative firebrands like Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene, staunch Trump supporters, easily secured re-election and are expected to continue their outspoken critiques of the media and Democrats. If Republicans hold onto the House, Speaker Mike Johnson, aligned with Trump, could find himself back in the White House.
