Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russia’s war in Ukraine could end “faster” if Donald Trump becomes U.S. president again. In a radio interview with Ukrainian broadcaster Suspilne, Zelensky acknowledged the challenging battlefield situation, where Russia is making advances with its superior manpower and weaponry. He emphasized that the war could conclude more swiftly under the leadership of Trump’s administration, citing the policy approach of the incoming team and their commitment to the issue. Zelensky also stressed Ukraine’s responsibility to work towards ending the war diplomatically by next year.
Trump, who was recently elected for a second term, has repeatedly claimed that the war would not have occurred under his leadership and has suggested he could resolve it in one day, though he has not explained how. Throughout his campaign, Trump and running mate JD Vance questioned continued U.S. support for Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia is making gains in eastern and southeastern Ukraine, particularly near the city of Kurakhove. Moscow also plans a counteroffensive in the southern Russian region of Kursk, where Ukraine had a significant military success earlier this year.
Zelensky admitted that the situation in the east was difficult, with Russia making slow but steady advances. Despite Russia’s losses, which Zelensky said could amount to 2,000 soldiers per day, he believes Russia cannot sustain its offensive with such high casualties. Zelensky also criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling it a move that undermines efforts to isolate the Russian leader.
