President-elect Donald Trump announced on Sunday his selection of Brendan Carr as the new chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Carr, currently the top Republican commissioner, will lead the agency responsible for regulating radio, television, and cable communications.

“Commissioner Carr is a warrior for Free Speech and has fought against regulatory Lawfare that stifles Americans’ freedoms and economic growth,” Trump stated. He added that Carr would put an end to the “regulatory onslaught” hindering innovation and support rural America.

Expressing his gratitude, Carr wrote on X, “Thank you, President Trump! I am humbled and honored to serve as Chairman of the FCC. Now we get to work.” He has not provided additional comments.

Carr contributed to Project 2025, a conservative policy guide, where he outlined the FCC’s priorities: limiting Big Tech’s influence, bolstering national security, promoting economic growth, and ensuring agency accountability. In his chapter, Carr advocated banning TikTok if it remains tied to its China-based parent company. He also urged Congress to reform Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which protects social media companies from liability for user content. Carr proposed limiting these protections to prevent “censorship of protected speech.”

The FCC consists of five commissioners, with a maximum of three from the same political party, ensuring bipartisan representation. Carr’s leadership is expected to shape the agency’s future direction on technology, regulation, and free speech.
