Art Cashin, a legendary figure in finance and director of floor operations at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) for UBS, has passed away at 83, the firm announced. His Wall Street career spanned over six decades, earning him the nickname “Wall Street’s Walter Cronkite” for his insightful and humorous commentary on CNBC for more than 25 years.
Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1941, Cashin started his career at Thomson McKinnon in 1959. At 23, he became a NYSE member and partner at P.R. Herzig & Co. He later joined PaineWebber in 1980, managing their NYSE floor operations, which continued after UBS acquired the firm in 2000. During Cashin’s tenure, the NYSE floor was central to U.S. trading.
Cashin was celebrated for his daily newsletter, Cashin’s Comments, which blended market insights with trivia and recipes, amassing over 100,000 readers. His annual Thanksgiving recipe for “White Castle burger stuffing” became a Wall Street tradition.
A staple at Bobby Van’s Steakhouse in Manhattan, Cashin was known for enjoying a Dewar’s on ice after the markets closed. He also chaired the NYSE Fallen Heroes Fund, supporting families of fallen first responders.
Colleagues and admirers fondly recall his wit, market acumen, and warmth, which left an indelible mark on Wall Street culture. Details of his passing remain undisclosed.
