The Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Notre Dame has been postponed to Thursday following a deadly truck attack in New Orleans’ French Quarter early Wednesday morning, Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley announced.
“We’ve consulted all parties, and public safety is our priority,” Hundley said. The FBI is investigating the attack as terrorism. Law enforcement continues to secure the scene.
At least 15 people were killed, and 35 others injured when Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42, drove his truck at high speeds through Bourbon Street crowds. Explosives were found in the vehicle, which displayed an ISIS flag. Jabbar fired at police before being fatally shot. Two officers were injured in the exchange.
A shelter-in-place order was issued for Georgia’s team hotel, and one Georgia student is critically injured.
Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman addressed the tragedy: “In tough moments, the culture of any program or nation is revealed. We believe this nation will rally around New Orleans and support the victims.”
Despite the delay, the CFP quarterfinal between No. 2 Georgia (11-2) and No. 7 Notre Dame (12-1) is set for 4 p.m. ET Thursday. Freeman emphasized balancing preparation with mourning.
“We have to prepare for this opportunity while mourning and praying for our country,” he said. Support systems are in place for players affected by the tragedy.
Hundley expressed the committee’s devastation: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families. We’ll provide updates as they become available.”
