In his inaugural address, President Donald Trump vowed to usher in a “golden age,” declaring, “From this moment on, America’s decline is over.” Speaking in the Capitol Rotunda, he cast himself as a peacemaker and uniter while revisiting themes from his first term, emphasizing grievances and pledging to reverse Biden-era policies.
Trump, who won a narrow popular vote in 2024, claimed a mandate for sweeping changes. He promised to end federal diversity initiatives and establish policies he framed as a “revolution of common sense” on race and gender, promoting a “colorblind” meritocracy. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, he honored the civil rights leader’s legacy, suggesting his vision aligned with King’s dream.
The speech marked a continuation of Trump’s divisive rhetoric. He sharply criticized outgoing President Joe Biden, seated nearby, for his policies on immigration, foreign affairs, and more. Trump described his victory as divine intervention, referencing an attempt on his life the previous year that he said strengthened his resolve.
While calling for unity, Trump announced policies that could deepen divisions, including opposing diversity measures and asserting there are only two genders. Critics noted the speech resembled a campaign rally more than a presidential inauguration.
“Over the past eight years, I’ve been tested more than any president,” Trump said, though he did not elaborate on lessons learned. His tone throughout the day echoed the grievances that have long defined his political style, leaving questions about whether he can deliver on his promises of unity.
