The United States will officially withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO) on January 22, 2026, following President Donald Trump’s formal notification to the United Nations. Trump, who has criticized the WHO for mishandling the pandemic and other health crises, announced the decision just hours after being sworn in for a second term. The WHO, the recipient of around 18% of its funding from the U.S., expressed regret over the move.

Under U.S. law, the withdrawal will take effect one year after notice is given, with the U.S. government expected to settle outstanding dues as required by a 1948 joint resolution of Congress. The WHO’s 2024-2025 budget totals $6.8 billion, but the exact amount owed by the U.S. is unclear. Trump’s decision halts U.S. participation in negotiations for a pandemic treaty, and government personnel working with the WHO will be reassigned.

The move is expected to impact critical WHO programs, including those addressing tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and other global health emergencies. Trump’s previous attempt to withdraw in 2020 was reversed by President Joe Biden on his first day in office in 2021. The current withdrawal process, however, is set to proceed under Trump’s administration.
