Alabama A&M officials issued an apology Wednesday night after mistakenly announcing the death of football player Medrick Burnett Jr. The university initially reported that the 20-year-old athlete had passed away, citing information from an immediate family member. However, the school later clarified that Burnett remains alive and in stable condition.
In a statement, the university’s athletic department called the incident an “unfortunate occurrence,” expressing regret for sharing false information. “We hold complete joy in knowing that Medrick remains in stable condition,” the department added.
Burnett suffered a serious injury during the Magic City Classic against Alabama State on October 26. According to a family fundraiser, he sustained multiple brain bleeds and swelling, requiring a craniotomy as a last resort to save his life.
Denise Burnett, Medrick’s mother, told NBC affiliate WAFF that her son remains hospitalized. “When the time comes, we will issue a statement about what we have been through,” she said.
Burnett, a redshirt freshman linebacker, transferred to Alabama A&M from Grambling and played in seven games this season. His best performance came on September 21, recording three tackles against Austin Peay.
Alabama A&M, with a 6-5 overall record and 4-3 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, will conclude its season Friday against Florida A&M in Tallahassee.
