President Joe Biden on Sunday condemned President-elect Donald Trump’s efforts to end birthright citizenship, calling it “awful.” Speaking at the White House, Biden said the transition to Trump’s administration appeared smooth but hinted at internal challenges within Trump’s team.
On the upcoming anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, Biden reiterated his view that Trump posed a “genuine threat to democracy” by falsely claiming victory in the 2020 election and inciting his supporters to storm the Capitol. “It should not be rewritten. I don’t think it should be forgotten,” Biden said, emphasizing the dangers of white supremacy and its threat to the nation.
Biden praised America’s multicultural strength, stating, “It’s the reason why we’re so strong. It’s the reason why we’re who we are.” He criticized Trump’s proposal to end birthright citizenship, a constitutional guarantee for anyone born in the U.S., regardless of parental immigration status. “The idea we’re going to change a constitutional birthright … What’s going on?” Biden asked.
Biden also condemned Trump’s opposition to a bipartisan immigration bill that sought stronger border enforcement. “It’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous,” Biden said.
Trump has used immigration as a cornerstone of his 2024 campaign, which he won against Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump recently told NBC he would take executive action on his first day in office to end birthright citizenship.
Biden’s comments highlight ongoing tensions over immigration and democracy, underscoring the challenges ahead in Trump’s transition to the presidency.
