President Joe Biden signed the Social Security Fairness Act into law on Sunday, marking the first expansion of benefits in 20 years. The new measure boosts retirement payments for certain public pensioners, including former police officers, firefighters, and postal workers, by repealing provisions that had reduced their benefits.

The Senate approved the legislation last month, following earlier approval by the House of Representatives. Biden emphasized the importance of economic security for retirees, stating, “Americans who have worked hard all their lives should be able to retire with dignity.” He highlighted the law’s alignment with the original goals of the Social Security system established by Franklin D. Roosevelt nearly 90 years ago.

The law reverses a decades-old policy that capped benefits for higher-earning workers receiving pensions. Initially aimed at limiting federal payouts, the rule increasingly affected a broader range of public employees over time. The new legislation ensures these retirees receive full benefits, reflecting their years of hard work and public service.

This landmark change is expected to provide financial relief to thousands of retirees who have long faced reduced benefits under the old system, reaffirming Social Security’s mission of supporting economic stability in retirement.
