President Joe Biden will conclude his political career with an Oval Office address, reflecting on a legacy marked by significant accomplishments and challenges. Biden, who defeated Donald Trump in 2020, ran for re-election at 80, convinced he was the only Democrat capable of preventing Trump’s return. After losing the Democratic primary to Vice President Kamala Harris in July, Biden faced criticism for his role in Democrats’ November losses.

Biden’s tenure included steering the U.S. through COVID recovery, revitalizing infrastructure, boosting semiconductor manufacturing, and addressing climate change. His administration leaves behind a resilient economy and hopeful businesses but struggled to bridge divisions or halt global democratic backsliding.

Biden’s foreign policy achievements included uniting allies against Russia’s war in Ukraine and ending U.S. involvement in Afghanistan, though the chaotic withdrawal and subsequent loss of military lives dented his approval. His support for Israel during its conflict with Hamas fractured his party and alienated some progressive Democrats.

Critics argue Biden’s decision to seek re-election overshadowed his 2020 victory over Trump. As the Republican president-elect prepares to reverse much of Biden’s progress, the outgoing president urged Americans to persist in championing equality and democracy, saying, “The soul of America is still at stake.”

Despite short-term challenges, allies highlight Biden’s legislative record, likening it to LBJ’s achievements, with long-term impacts yet to be fully realized. Observers note that while Biden stabilized the nation after Trump’s presidency, his legacy will likely be defined as an interlude between Trump’s terms.
