The Irvine Police Department in California has rolled out a Tesla Cybertruck, becoming the first police force in the U.S. to introduce this futuristic vehicle. Unlike traditional patrol cars, the Cybertruck will primarily be used for community outreach programs, particularly during school visits as part of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) initiative. Officers participating in the DARE program will drive the Cybertruck, aimed at educating young students about resisting drug use.

Police Chief Michael Kent expressed pride in leading the nation with this cutting-edge vehicle, emphasizing its role in engaging the public. “We’ve seen firsthand how unique vehicles attract attention and encourage dialogue between law enforcement and the community,” said Kent. The Cybertruck with its striking appearance and custom police graphics, is expected to spark curiosity among car enthusiasts and the general public. Chief Kent believes such vehicles help break down barriers and build trust between law enforcement and citizens.

The Cybertruck’s price tag exceeded $150,000 making it a significant investment for the department including the cost of aftermarket police equipment. By comparison, a traditional Ford Police Interceptor costs around $116,000. However, the department expects the Cybertruck to deliver long-term savings by slashing fuel costs. According to estimates, the Cybertruck could save up to $6,000 in fuel over 5 years.
