The FBI has unveiled fresh surveillance footage in its ongoing search for the suspect who planted pipe bombs near the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 5, 2021. The video shows the individual placing a bomb outside the Democratic National Committee building and another near the Republican National Committee headquarters. Both sites are close to the Capitol, where the Jan. 6 riot unfolded.

The bombs, discovered on Jan. 6, were safely deactivated and did not detonate. Despite receiving over 600 tips and offering a $500,000 reward, the FBI has not identified the suspect, who remains at large four years later.

David Sundberg, assistant director of the FBI’s Washington field office, expressed hope that the new footage could spark fresh leads. “We believe there are people with information who haven’t come forward,” he said.

The suspect, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall, wore a gray sweatshirt, pants, and distinctive black and gray Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes. The FBI also released a map of the suspect’s route that night, but the 15-hour delay between planting and discovery has hindered the investigation.

It remains unclear if the bombs were directly connected to the Capitol riot. However, their discovery diverted police resources on the day when supporters of Donald Trump stormed the Capitol to disrupt the certification of his 2020 election defeat.

Trump, set to be sworn in for a second term on Jan. 20, 2025, has vowed to pardon some of the nearly 1,600 individuals charged for their roles in the Capitol attack.
