Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba expressed strong disapproval on Monday regarding the U.S. government’s decision to block Nippon Steel’s acquisition of U.S. Steel. According to Ishiba, the move, orchestrated by a review board and former President Joe Biden, amounted to “unjust political interference.”

The acquisition, a major deal between two steel giants, was seen as a strategic step for Nippon Steel to expand its operations and strengthen its position in the global market. However, the U.S. government intervened, citing national security concerns, which led to the deal’s cancellation. Ishiba, representing Japan’s stance, argued that such a decision was more politically motivated than based on legitimate concerns over security. He believes this action undermines fair market practices and harms international trade relations.

Nippon Steel has yet to comment publicly on the incident, while the U.S. government maintains that the decision was in line with its national security priorities. The move highlights ongoing tensions between the two countries over trade and foreign investment in key industries like steel production.
