Key Details
The state funeral begins Saturday in Georgia, featuring a motorcade through his hometown of Plains and stops at the state capitol and Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta, where he will lie in repose. Carter will then be flown to Washington on Jan. 9 to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.
A funeral service will follow at Washington National Cathedral, where President Joe Biden is expected to deliver the eulogy. Afterwards, Carter will return to Georgia for a private burial in Plains.
Public Observances
President Biden declared Jan. 9 a national day of mourning and ordered flags at half-staff for 30 days. Instead of flowers, the Carter family requested donations to the Carter Center supporting global health, peace, and human rights initiatives.
