Luigi Mangione has been indicted on 11 counts, including first-degree murder and terrorism-related charges, for the fatal shooting of UnitedHealth Group executive Brian Thompson on a Manhattan street earlier this month. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg described the killing as a “frightening, well-planned, targeted murder” meant to incite terror. If convicted, Mangione, 26, faces life in prison without parole.
Thompson was killed outside a Manhattan hotel before a company conference, sparking public outrage over the rising costs of healthcare in the U.S. A five-day manhunt ended with Mangione’s arrest in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where he was initially charged with gun possession. Authorities are preparing to extradite him to New York.
Prosecutors highlighted the chilling details of the case, including shell casings at the scene marked with the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose,” echoing criticisms of the health insurance industry. While Mangione’s motive remains under investigation, his alleged actions have been condemned by officials, including New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who rejected any attempts to rationalize or glorify the killing.
Despite this, Mangione has received support in some circles, with an online fundraiser for his legal defense drawing over a thousand donations. Friends and social media posts suggest Mangione suffered from chronic back pain, though it is unclear if this played a role in the attack. UnitedHealth Group stated Mangione was not a customer.
The incident has reignited public anger over healthcare affordability, but officials stress that Mangione’s alleged crime cannot be justified or celebrated.
