Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 84, was injured during a trip to Luxembourg and has been hospitalized for evaluation, her office confirmed on Friday. Pelosi, the first woman to serve as House Speaker and a long-time leader of the House Democratic Caucus, was in Luxembourg with a bipartisan Congressional delegation to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. A spokesperson said Pelosi sustained an injury during an official engagement but did not specify the cause.
Pelosi is receiving excellent care from medical professionals and continues to work, according to her spokesperson. She follows Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, 82, who also suffered an injury this week after falling in the Capitol. McConnell, like Pelosi, will step down from his leadership role following the 2022 elections, with Senator Jon Thune, 63, set to succeed him.
Pelosi resigned as Speaker in 2023 when Republicans took control of the House. Despite stepping down, she was reelected to a 20th term in Congress in November with 81% of the vote. Pelosi played a pivotal role in passing President Joe Biden’s $1 trillion infrastructure bill in 2022 and had a contentious relationship with former President Donald Trump. Serving under seven U.S. presidents, Pelosi held the Speaker’s position from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023.
