Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel have filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration, with hearings set for February and March, according to Kyodo news agency. The news agency, which did not cite its sources, reported on Monday that the lawsuit stems from President Joe Biden’s order blocking Nippon Steel’s proposed $14.9 billion acquisition of U.S. Steel due to national security concerns.

On January 6, the two steelmakers officially initiated legal action, challenging the administration’s decision to halt the deal. The proposed acquisition had aimed to create one of the world’s largest steel producers, with Nippon Steel seeking to expand its global footprint. However, the Biden administration cited potential risks to U.S. national security as grounds for its intervention, effectively derailing the transaction.

The legal battle highlights growing tensions between government oversight and corporate mergers in strategic industries. The administration’s concerns likely stem from maintaining control over critical domestic resources, especially steel production, which is often considered vital for national defense and infrastructure.

The hearings will provide a platform for both parties to present their arguments and could set a precedent for future government intervention in cross-border corporate acquisitions. This case is expected to draw significant attention due to its implications for global trade and national security policies.
