A construction executive accused of illegally contributing to New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ 2021 campaign plans to plead guilty, according to court records. Federal prosecutors in Manhattan revealed that Erden Arkan intends to admit to conspiracy to commit wire fraud for facilitating “straw” donations—contributions made under false names—to Adams’ campaign.

The plea could strengthen the prosecution’s case as Adams faces an April 21 trial during his re-election bid. Arkan, a prominent figure in NYC’s Turkish community, allegedly made the donations at the request of a Turkish official.

Adams has denied charges of accepting over $90,000 in luxury perks from Turkish officials in exchange for pressuring city fire officials to approve Turkey’s new Manhattan consulate despite safety concerns. He also faces allegations of seeking illegal campaign contributions from foreign nationals.

Adams’ lawyer, Alex Spiro, and Jonathan Rosen, representing Arkan, declined to comment. Federal prosecutors and Adams’ team have yet to provide further statements.

Former President Donald Trump has suggested he may pardon Adams after taking office in January, framing the charges as politically motivated due to Adams’ criticism of President Joe Biden’s handling of migration. Trump called migration one of his key campaign issues.

The case’s developments could impact Adams’ political future as his trial approaches.
