Decision Desk HQ projected on Monday that President-elect Donald Trump’s Republican Party has secured a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, indicating that Republicans will control both chambers of Congress. However, Edison Research has not yet made a projection for House control; it estimates Republicans hold at least 214 seats, with Democrats at 206, while 15 seats remain undecided. A House majority requires a minimum of 218 seats.
Edison Research has also projected a Republican majority in the U.S. Senate, with at least 52 seats to the Democrats’ 46.
During Trump’s first term from 2017 to 2021, his administration’s most significant legislative achievement was enacting sweeping tax cuts, set to expire next year. These tax cuts, along with President Joe Biden’s landmark $1 trillion infrastructure law, passed during periods when each president’s party held control of both chambers of Congress. In contrast, under divided government in the past two years, Biden has faced challenges in advancing new legislation, and Congress has struggled with fundamental tasks, such as securing funds to keep the government operating.
