The Senate is expected to confirm former U.S. Representative Tulsi Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence (DNI) on Wednesday morning, despite concerns over her lack of intelligence experience. The vote follows a 52-46 procedural measure on Monday to limit debate, paving the way for final approval.

Gabbard, 43, a former Democrat and Army National Guard veteran, has faced bipartisan scrutiny over past statements seen as sympathetic to Russia and Syria, as well as her defense of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Despite this, Senate Republicans have rallied behind her, with Majority Leader John Thune securing enough votes.

Opponents questioned Gabbard’s qualifications, noting she has never served on an intelligence committee. Traditionally, DNIs have been seasoned intelligence professionals, such as former Director Daniel Coats and Avril Haines.

Trump’s influence has played a key role in Gabbard’s confirmation, with allies like Elon Musk pressuring Republicans to support her. Senator Todd Young, initially hesitant, backed Gabbard after she assured him she would support intelligence professionals.

If confirmed, Gabbard will oversee the 18-agency U.S. intelligence community, a role created after the 9/11 attacks to enhance national security coordination. She has pledged to pare down the DNI’s office in line with Trump’s push to streamline government operations.

The vote was delayed due to a snowstorm, but with a 53-47 Republican majority and Vice President JD Vance abroad, GOP leaders remain confident. Gabbard’s confirmation marks another victory for Trump as he reshapes key national security roles.
