U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to speak in the coming weeks as Trump, set to return to office on Jan. 20, aims to address the Ukraine war. While Trump has pledged to end the conflict swiftly, details of his approach remain unclear.
Incoming national security adviser Mike Waltz described the war as a “meat grinder” with severe global consequences, emphasizing the need for a diplomatic resolution. Speaking to ABC, Waltz stated, “It’s unrealistic to believe every Russian can be expelled from Ukrainian territory, including Crimea. President Trump has acknowledged this reality, and now the world must move forward.”
Waltz confirmed an expected call between Trump and Putin, which he labeled a critical first step.
Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine has caused immense human suffering, displaced millions, and fractured relations between Moscow and the West to levels not seen since the Cuban Missile Crisis.
U.S. officials accuse Russia of election interference, jailing Americans on false charges, and undermining Western allies. In turn, Moscow sees the U.S. as a declining power that disregards Russia’s post-Soviet interests while seeking to destabilize its society.
The upcoming dialogue could mark a pivotal moment in navigating the war’s resolution.
