Pam Bondi, Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general, is set to face tough questions from Senate Democrats over concerns about impartiality and ethical conduct. Bondi, 59, served as Florida attorney general (2011-2019) and defended Trump during his 2019 impeachment trial. She replaced Matt Gaetz, who withdrew amid a House ethics probe.
Democrats are expected to grill Bondi on her ability to prioritize national interests over Trump’s. She previously declined to investigate Trump University after receiving a $25,000 donation from the Trump Foundation—a decision she denies was influenced by the contribution. Bondi also backed Trump’s claims of election fraud following his 2020 defeat and supported legal efforts to defend him against federal and state charges.
Her lobbying work for firms like Amazon, Uber, General Motors, and GEO Group is also under scrutiny. Critics cite potential conflicts of interest given these companies’ ties to Justice Department investigations and contracts. Bondi pledged to consult ethics officials in any conflict scenarios.
The Senate is reviewing Trump’s cabinet picks before his return to office, with hearings already held for defense secretary Pete Hegseth and treasury secretary nominee Scott Bessent. Bondi’s confirmation hearing is expected to spotlight her record and potential alignment with Trump’s personal interests.
