Donald Trump, once a divisive figure in U.S. politics, begins his second term as president on Monday, wielding more power and influence than ever before. After leaving office in 2021 amidst controversy and impeachment, Trump has staged a remarkable comeback.

Unlike his turbulent first term, Trump’s return is marked by a decisive electoral win and unwavering support from his party. Republican skeptics have been sidelined, replaced by loyalists determined to advance his agenda. With a Supreme Court leaning in his favor and Silicon Valley leaders like Elon Musk offering support, Trump appears poised to reshape Washington.

His policies promise disruption: steep tariffs, mass deportations, and a Justice Department focused on his adversaries. Despite potential risks to the economy and markets, Trump retains a strong base, including younger voters and Hispanics. His legal troubles, including felony convictions, have only bolstered his image as a fighter.

Trump’s second term builds on his controversial legacy. His confrontation with China and protectionist trade policies now define bipartisan approaches. Even President Biden maintained many of Trump’s tariffs during his tenure.

Critics warn of a constitutional crisis as Trump considers withholding Congress-approved funds and purging the federal workforce. Meanwhile, he has floated bold initiatives, such as buying Greenland and expanding U.S. territorial control.

As Trump takes office, his impact is undeniable. Once an outsider, he now defines the political landscape, with his vision dominating both parties. “Since 2015, we’ve been in the Trump era,” says Matthew Continetti of the American Enterprise Institute.
