On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at establishing America as the global leader in artificial intelligence (AI). In the Oval Office, Trump emphasized his goal to “make America the world capital in artificial intelligence.” The order mandates a 180-day timeline for creating an AI Action Plan, which will outline policies to ensure the nation’s continued dominance in AI while prioritizing human well-being, economic growth, and national security.

Additionally, Trump directed his AI adviser and national security assistant to work on removing policies and regulations implemented by the previous administration. This includes revoking a 2023 executive order signed by former President Joe Biden. Biden’s order focused on mitigating AI risks to consumers, workers, and national security by requiring AI developers to share safety test results with the U.S. government before releasing systems that could pose significant threats to national security, the economy, or public health. This policy was aligned with the Defense Production Act.

By signing the new executive order, Trump aims to promote innovation in AI while safeguarding U.S. interests, signaling a shift in the nation’s approach to regulating and advancing AI technologies.
