President Donald Trump assumed control of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, becoming chairman and dismissing its president, Deborah Rutter. The board, now filled with Trump appointees, elected him chair and named former ambassador Richard Grennell as interim president.

Trump replaces billionaire philanthropist David Rubenstein, who had planned to serve as chair until 2026. Rutter had already announced her intent to step down at the year’s end. The Kennedy Center, home to the National Symphony Orchestra and the Washington National Opera, has long been a cultural institution in Washington, known for its Kennedy Center Honors performances—an event Trump skipped during his first term.

The move follows Trump’s criticism of the center for hosting “Drag Shows.” His new appointees include White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino, and Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance. Former President Joe Biden’s appointees, including ex-press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, were removed.

Trump’s takeover is part of his broader efforts to reshape government institutions, including plans to eliminate the Department of Education and USAID. His administration has also dismissed other officials within Rutter’s office.

The Kennedy Center’s board now has 31 members, firmly under Trump’s influence.
