Donald Trump is set to ring the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, coinciding with his expected designation as Time magazine’s “Person of the Year.” While Time declined to comment on the selection, two sources close to the matter confirmed the plans. Trump, who made his fortune in New York real estate before transitioning into politics, is expected to be honored by the magazine for his impact in 2024. His first term as president saw him measuring success, in part, through the performance of the stock market, which has continued to rise following his re-election.
Ringing the bell at the NYSE marks the start or close of a trading day, and is a prestigious event typically reserved for company executives celebrating significant milestones like an initial public offering. However, politicians and public figures, including Ronald Reagan, Nelson Mandela, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, have also been invited to participate in this symbolic act.
Trump was named Time’s “Person of the Year” in 2016. In 2020, the honor went to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris after they defeated Trump in the presidential election. Last year, pop star Taylor Swift received the prestigious title. Politico first reported Trump’s selection and plans to ring the bell.
