US Border Chief Warns Canada Could Be ‘Gateway for Terrorists

TOM HOMAN TOM HOMAN

Tom Homan, the “border czar” appointed by President-elect Donald Trump, has raised significant concerns about Canada’s border security, warning that Canada could be a “gateway for terrorists” into the US. Homan pointed to what he described as “extreme national security vulnerabilities” along the US-Canada border, saying Canada has not taken border security seriously for over a decade. He highlighted a recent incident where a Pakistani citizen was arrested in Quebec for planning an attack in New York City, underscoring the need for tighter security measures.

Homan, former Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), stressed that tightening northern border security would be a priority for the incoming Trump administration. He expressed concern over the rise in human smuggling, with organized crime groups in Canada charging thousands for illegal crossings, often in remote areas like forests and rivers. The US Border Patrol has reported a significant surge in illegal crossings in areas near the Canadian border, further fueling these security concerns.

Homan indicated that Trump’s administration would push for increased collaboration with Canada, though he warned of “tough conversations” with Ottawa. In response to US pressure, Canada recently reinstated certain visa requirements to curb illegal crossings. Homan, a native of upstate New York, stated his commitment to border security, pledging “the largest deportation operation this country has ever seen.” His oversight will cover both northern and southern borders, with an emphasis on tackling human smuggling and irregular border crossings.
