The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) reported delivering at least 99.2 million ballots during the November 2024 presidential election, with 99.88% reaching election officials within a week. Despite concerns raised earlier by election officials regarding processing delays, lost mail, and training deficiencies, USPS maintained similar performance levels to 2020, when 99.89% of ballots were delivered within seven days.

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy praised USPS’s efforts, stating, “In 2024, the Postal Service once again admirably performed our role of efficiently and effectively delivering the nation’s ballots.” However, challenges remain. USPS highlighted that some states allowed voters to request mail ballots too close to Election Day on November 5, resulting in 150,630 ballots entering the mail between October 31 and Election Day—too late for guaranteed delivery. USPS emphasized the need for consistent nationwide policies to improve election mail operations.

To ensure smooth ballot delivery, USPS deployed ballot monitors and reinforced procedures across processing, retail, and delivery units starting October 1. Overall, the organization handled 3.37 billion pieces of political and election mail in 2024.

The popularity of mail-in voting has surged, with 46% of votes cast by mail in 2020 compared to 21% in 2016. Yet, USPS faces mounting financial challenges. It reported a net loss of $9.5 billion for the fiscal year ending September 30, a $3 billion increase from the previous year, and warned of potential financial collapse without significant cost-cutting and revenue growth.

Despite these hurdles, USPS demonstrated its commitment to election mail, ensuring millions of ballots were delivered effectively and on time.
