Special Counsel David Weiss criticized President Joe Biden’s remarks on the prosecution of his son, Hunter Biden, calling them “gratuitous and wrong” in his final report published Monday.
Weiss prosecuted Hunter Biden for lying about his drug use when purchasing a gun in 2018 and for evading $1.4 million in taxes. In December, Joe Biden pardoned his son for these offenses and other conduct over an 11-year span, stating the cases were influenced by “raw politics.”
“This statement erodes public confidence in the justice system and undermines its fairness,” Weiss countered in the report. The criticism came after Weiss, appointed to ensure independence in sensitive investigations, wrapped up his probe.
Hunter Biden was convicted on gun charges in June and pleaded guilty to tax charges after a plea deal unraveled in 2023 under federal judicial scrutiny. Weiss secured indictments that exposed Hunter Biden to significant legal risks, following years of Republican-led investigations into Hunter’s foreign business dealings.
Hunter Biden and his legal team argued the cases were politically motivated and claimed such charges are rarely pursued by federal prosecutors. Weiss, initially appointed as U.S. attorney by President Trump, insisted his actions were lawful and unbiased.
“I prosecuted these cases because Mr. Biden broke the law,” Weiss stated, defending his handling of the investigation.
