Raging wildfires in Los Angeles spread to the Hollywood Hills Wednesday, forcing over 100,000 evacuations and straining firefighting resources. The fires, fueled by dry, hurricane-force winds, have scorched thousands of acres, destroyed hundreds of homes, and killed at least five people.

Hollywood’s Sunset Fire burned 50 acres near iconic landmarks like the Dolby Theatre and Walk of Fame, prompting delays for Oscar nominations. Nearby, fires in Studio City destroyed homes and endangered properties.

The Palisades Fire consumed 15,832 acres and reached the Pacific Ocean, destroying homes, including one reportedly belonging to actors Leighton Meester and Adam Brody. Meanwhile, the Eaton Fire in the San Gabriel foothills claimed 10,600 acres, over 1,000 structures, and five lives. Looting arrests added to the chaos.

Fire crews from six states joined the battle as red-flag conditions persisted. Water shortages complicated efforts, with some hydrants running dry. Authorities scrambled to refill reservoirs as Los Angeles County saw nearly 300,000 power outages.

Emergency shelters opened for evacuees and their animals, including horses, alpacas, and pigs. Winds were expected to ease briefly but would remain a concern through Friday.

President Joe Biden declared the fires a major disaster and joined California Governor Gavin Newsom for a briefing in Santa Monica. As the fires continue, officials warn of extensive economic losses, estimated at over $50 billion.
