The New York Yankees are heading to the World Series after defeating the Cleveland Guardians 5-2 in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Saturday.
This marks a return to baseball’s biggest stage for the Yankees, who haven’t participated in the World Series since their victory in 2009. Although a 15-year gap may not seem extensive, it ties the franchise record for the longest interval between pennants.
The Yankees advanced to the Fall Classic thanks to timely hitting from their top players, especially designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton, and a nearly flawless bullpen, aside from a collapse in Game 3 against the Guardians.
After trailing 0-2, Stanton hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, tying the game and forcing extra innings.
In the top of the 10th, Juan Soto put the game away for the Yankees with a three-run home run, bringing the score to 5-2 with two outs.
While the Yankees have not made it to the World Series recently, they have consistently reached the playoffs, making it to five championship series in 2010, 2012, 2017, 2019, and 2022.
Their last three championship series losses came at the hands of the Houston Astros, who have dominated the American League for nearly a decade.
